The Golan Heights is a wine region in Israel with very high elevations that live up to its name. It is often considered a subregion of the larger Galilee, covering the Sea of Galilee to Mount Hermon. This is considered one of the most favorable grape growing zones in the country because these high slopes benefit from cooler microclimates in the summer months compared to the often blazing hot territory surrounding it. For this reason, many of the top boutique and corporate wineries in Israel are located here. Of course, as things are in this part of the world, not only do producers have to deal with the day to day struggles of wine production, but also challenges from ongoing political strife.

Wine production has traditionally leaned toward French grapes and styles, but is becoming increasingly more experimental and New World. Grapes grown run the gamut from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, etc. to Pinot Noir, Muscat, Viognier, Mourvedre, Grenache and even Tempranillo Read more »

  • Golan Heights Winery Yarden Malbec Galilee 2013

Dark, syrupy and rich with sticky, herbal licorice and birch bark aromas alongside black currant and cherry fruit. Intriguing and generous palate of blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit with fresh acidity and a dirty, dusty earthiness underlying the fruit and delivering chewy tannins and espresso on the finish.
