Tokaj Wine

Tokaj is the prized sweet wine of Hungary, produced in the northeast Tokaj-Hegyalja region, at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. Wine has been produced in the region for centuries, dating back to the Roman era when the land was known as Pannonia. However, it was not a sweet wine until the 1630s.

With the Ottoman invasions, many of the glorious vineyards that had been cultivated by Hungarian royal decree were left to rot because of strict Muslim law forbidding alcohol consumption. Some wine was still being produced, but always under fear of attack. Legend has it that a local wine-maker was forced to abandon his harvest fearing one such raid, and upon return, found his grapes had developed what became known as Botrytis cinerea, or “noble rot.” He shrugged his shoulders and made the wine anyway, yielding spectacular results no one had imagined. With this serendipitous viticultural discovery, the wine known as Tokaj Aszu, which many consider among the world’s finest, was born Read more »

Tokaj on Snooth

  • Royal Tokaji Furmint 2011

    Snoothrank:

Another one from the Jubliation 90's under $20 racks. A beautiful pale, pale gold color. Opens with a bit of muskiness, wind over grass, and wood. Full in the mouth, medium acidity. Medium Dry with a long finish. To me, very similar to an unoaked French Chardonnay and like them, great complexity and acidity. Had alone, but would be great with fo... Read More

  • Erzsebet Pince Kiraly Dulo Furmint 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very much straw coloring in the glass. Absolutely no nose at all. Initial fruit flavors of peach with concomitant fruity sweetness. Beyond maybe a hint of oxidation I do not get much more from this wine. A little bit of tartness on the finish probably saves it in my view. Read More

  • Tokaj is in the Zemplén mountains, which abut the Carpathians. They're ancient volcanos. It's all about mountains there. All of the great vineyards are on hills. Eger is a mountain city. It's hard to find flat areas there even if you wanted to. Somló is also on extinct volcanos. Sopron is close to Burgenland in Austria. It's more hilly than mount... Read More
