The Greek Aegean Islands are one of the world’s oldest wine-making regions. Their geographic location between Greece and Egypt made them a great trading hub in the ancient world, their prized wines marketed throughout the empires. The temperate climate, volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and climate moderators from the Aegean all contribute to outstanding grape growing conditions.

Though wine is produced in some capacity throughout the Aegean island system, the most important wine-making islands are Santorini, Rhodes, Crete and Samos.

The tradition of wine-making on Santorini, a.k.a. Thira, dates back to the Bronze Age. One of the most devastating volcanic eruptions in recorded history happened here around 1650 BC, covering the island in ash, pumice and lava, and destroying Minoan settlements. But in its wake, this contributed to very favorable soils for wine grapes, with some extant old vines that never suffered from Phylloxera. Assyrtiko is the region’s star white Read more »

Aegean Islands on Snooth

  • Gavalas Santorini 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight on the nose with a fine blend of mineral and subtle sage like aromas. Juicy on entry, this hits the palate with admirably purity and liveliness showing off very clear and tense flavors of dusty dry earth, yellow fruits, and a faint hint of yellow tomato that picks up where the sage on the nose leaves off. I really the clarity this shows on... Read More

  • Greek Wine Cellars Santorini 2012

    Snoothrank:

Pretty surprising. I was expecting a very stark, crisp wine. The first sip made me think of a California Chardonnay. Fortunately, that first impression faded. There is an oaky/vanilla hint at first, but it quickly passes and I get some peachy, lemony acid that make me feel this will be a good seafood accompaniment, tonight. US$11.68 at Tota... Read More

  • Argyros Red Blend Santorini Atlantis 2008

    Snoothrank:

I'm guessing this is what I had - Argyros Atlantis Regional Dry Red, 2008 vintage. I liked this winery's white, and this was not a disappointment either. It smelled a bit like a shiraz, smoky and a little sour. The taste was fruity and jammy, with a dollop of smoky sourness. Nice tannins. Read More

Very pale straw, perhaps less concentration and fruit than earlier vintages, but with plenty of freshness and zest. Maybe wait until 2013 to drink Read More
