The Greek Aegean Islands are one of the world’s oldest wine-making regions. Their geographic location between Greece and Egypt made them a great trading hub in the ancient world, their prized wines marketed throughout the empires. The temperate climate, volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and climate moderators from the Aegean all contribute to outstanding grape growing conditions.

Though wine is produced in some capacity throughout the Aegean island system, the most important wine-making islands are Santorini, Rhodes, Crete and Samos.

The tradition of wine-making on Santorini, a.k.a. Thira, dates back to the Bronze Age. One of the most devastating volcanic eruptions in recorded history happened here around 1650 BC, covering the island in ash, pumice and lava, and destroying Minoan settlements. But in its wake, this contributed to very favorable soils for wine grapes, with some extant old vines that never suffered from Phylloxera. Assyrtiko is the region’s star white Read more »

Aegean Islands on Snooth

  • Boutari Santorini Santorini 2008

    Snoothrank:

A slightly heavy, resinous nose with light lemon tea robe. Orange rind and nutmeg abounds. A slightly "traveled" odor of stewed peaches and gooseberry. Similar flavors on the front and back palate. A bit warm but with the adequate, lively acidity associated with the Assyrtiko grape. Can be drunk young (no patience required - I disagree with... • Union of Winemaking Cooperatives of Samos Muscat Samos Samos Grand Cru 2005

    Snoothrank:

Pineapple and lemongrass on the nose. The wine has a very thick and sugary texture. Interestingly there are some darker, chemical notes towards the rear -interesting and I'm not sure if i was a fan of those. Read More

  • Gaia Estate Assyrtiko Santorini Thalassitis 2008

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with pear fruit tones, salty minerals and a touch of glue. In the mouth this is big, rich and polished with great depth of fruit and a zesty yet muscular texture that highlights the dried fruit notes of the mid-palate and the notes of white pepper and salt on the long finish. Wonderful balanced and complex this is beautiful win... Read More

  • Argyros Atlantis Red 10-3 2006

    Snoothrank:

A funky nose of barnyard and ripe red fruit. A bit of sweetness initially with tons of ripe cherry, cranberry and leather. Finish is mouth puckering with chalky tannins. Weird but very interesting ride of flavors. Read More

  • Samos Muscat Vin Doux 2007

    Snoothrank:

This was a wonderful bottle. Chill before drinking, but not too long. Upon opening the nose is filled with a strong aroma of honey and apricot (I dont pick up florals very well yet). It has a beautiful golden color. Its rather big for a white, slightly heavier than most. This was a high alcohol content at 15%. The first time I tried it I thought... Read More
