Greek Wine

Wine has been a part of Greek culture for at least 4,000 years. Of course, the “worship” of the ancient Greek god of wine, Dionysus, played an important role in lifestyle and cherished folklore for many centuries.

While excavating an ancient structure on the island of Crete, archaeologists discovered Minoan era wine presses, chalices, amphorae (that iconic two-handled, clay vessel) and wine grape seeds that date back to the 3rd century BC. In another dig, remarkably well preserved wine vessels were found in the ancient palace of King Minos in Knossos. On the mainland, the Myceneans, who existed from 1600-1100 BC, used fine gold and silver goblets to drink wine. Homer makes several mentions of wine in the Odyssey, which has in-depth descriptions of, for instance the  importance of wine as a travel comfort. Amphorae were shaped taller, with a pointed base, to allow for easier storage, and were distributed evenly to maintain the equilibrium of the ships. The ancient amphorae vary Read more »

  • Rapsani Tsantali Kreikka Punaviinit Tsantalis Vqprd Rapsani 2005

Perhaps it was the gorgeous Athens weather, or the savory Greek food, but our small foursome fell in love with this wine. It is a clear garnet color--with a velvety feel. This Rapsani has the most inviting bouquet, and provides an aftertaste that echoes its luscious flavor. We paired it with pork, veal, lamb, and beef, and it proved to be an el... Read More

  • Skouras Red Blend St. George 2007

This is a great introduction to Agiorgitiko. It's classically styled with soft acids but not too chunky allowing the red berry fruits to take center stage. It's got some snap to it so don't think this is flabby and it offers up some toasty notes and a hint of underbrush on both the nose and the palate. This could use some more length and elegan... • Gaia Estate Assyrtiko Santorini Thalassitis 2008

Spicy on the nose with pear fruit tones, salty minerals and a touch of glue. In the mouth this is big, rich and polished with great depth of fruit and a zesty yet muscular texture that highlights the dried fruit notes of the mid-palate and the notes of white pepper and salt on the long finish. Wonderful balanced and complex this is beautiful win... Read More
