Greek Wine

Wine has been a part of Greek culture for at least 4,000 years. Of course, the “worship” of the ancient Greek god of wine, Dionysus, played an important role in lifestyle and cherished folklore for many centuries.

While excavating an ancient structure on the island of Crete, archaeologists discovered Minoan era wine presses, chalices, amphorae (that iconic two-handled, clay vessel) and wine grape seeds that date back to the 3rd century BC. In another dig, remarkably well preserved wine vessels were found in the ancient palace of King Minos in Knossos. On the mainland, the Myceneans, who existed from 1600-1100 BC, used fine gold and silver goblets to drink wine. Homer makes several mentions of wine in the Odyssey, which has in-depth descriptions of, for instance the  importance of wine as a travel comfort. Greece on Snooth

  • Took this to my WSET 3 class since we were studying Greece, mixed reviews all around. Yellow to light gold in color, the nose is all about pine and lemon.  The taste is more of the same with medium light acidity and a medium short finish. Not for the faint of heart. From what I've read, this not the best expression of this wine as there is a sto... Read More

  • His paragraph? I have no more idea what he meant than he did! I guess he means ... Italy and south France and Greece and Croatia are basically very cold regions, whereas upstate New York, Michigan, and Idaho are practically tropical. But that's just a guess. And of course if the wine "smells of minerals", that's a real cue. See, minerals, whic... Read More

  • Rouvalis Roditis Asprolithi 2010

    Snoothrank:

The first impression I get from this wine is that it is very light bodied. Little to no fruit on the tip of the tongue. As it passes back, though, there is a pretty nice crisp green apple taste. This wine makes me think of Vinho Verde as much as anything else. Certainly is easy to drink. Read More
