The Rhine (Rhein in German, Rhin in French) is a major river that gives its name to a Tafelwein region in Germany and to the regions of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin in Alsace. Colloquially, all German wines are sometimes referred to as Rhine wines.

I recently opened a bottle of this wine in October 2012. The wine was 36 years old so my expectations were not so high. It was quite a surprise and proof to me that good German wine can last a long long time - as long as the best French. I let the wine breath for aprox 30 min before serving it. Then it had wonderful flavors of figs and apricots ... Read More

  • Diefenhardt'Sches Martinsthaler Wildsau Spatburgunder Erstes Gewachs 2009

Brilliant deep ruby in color, this wine possesses perfect ripeness for its structure. The aromas are rich - black cherries, crackling fireplace logs, charcoal grill pit. Vanilla appears on the palate, but this flavor melds rather well with the wine's ripeness. The finish is solidly medium. A wine to hold for 3-4 years before drinking again. Read More

  • Weingut Robert Konig Spätburgunder Auslese Trocken Assmannshäuser Frankenthal 2011

Moderate ruby red with a large paler ruby rim, this wine just misses the mark. Aromas favor sweetened whipped cream, macerating ripe red plums and pomegranate sorbet. The new oak is evident and just a bit much. However, the moderate tannins and easy acidity blend in well. The medium finish shows there's good substance here, so I'll be on watch f... Read More

  • Ponzi Vineyards Pinot Gris 2010

The nose showed green apple with light lemon, grasses and salty cheese rind. On the palate, it was light with a hint of sweetness and a spritz of effervescence, showing citrus fruits and young white peach. The finish was clean and refreshing with mineral tinged white fruit left lingering on the palate. Read More

  • Karl H. Johner Pinot Noir Kaiserstuhl Baden 2008

Medium-bodied with black cherry with undertones of sweet spice hopefully make those skeptical about Germany producing some very nice reds think twice. The bright fruit and depth of flavor make this a really nice wine to sip mid-summer. Read More
