Rheinhessen Wine

Rheinhessen, or Rhinehesse, is Germany’s largest and most productive wine region. The name, of course, derives from the Rhine river to its north, and it also touches the Nahe to the west. The Romans were the first to plant vines in the region. The Middle Ages brought the establishment of important religious towns such as Worms (where Martin Luther posted his famous edict), Bingen (of St. Hildegard fame), and Mainz, and members of the religious orders further expanded wine production. Worms in particular is famous for Liebfraumilch (Church of Our Lady), a semi-sweet wine produced at the Cathedral property since the 1800s. What began as a quality wine with a good reputation began over the years to spread all over the country, and with very little in the way of quality control. Let the Blue Nun flow! For this wine alone, for many years Rheinhessen wines were considered the ultimate plonk. Even American jug wines in this style were called “Rhine.” However, in recent years, producers Read more »

  • Dachshund Riesling 2012

Typical German Riesling. We had a platter of apples, grapes & cheeses to go with it. The white sharp cheddar really brought out the sharper notes of the wine. Read More

  • Heinz Eifel Shine Gewurztraminer Rheinhessen 2013

Cayenne pepper, cut grass and green apple aromas. Lemon, green apple, lychee, honey, pear flavors greet the palate, continuing with tangerine and aloe. This may be a bit of an oxymoron, but for a simple wine its quite complex. Between the herbal green notes, warm citrus fruits and long tart finish with a hint of cream, its worth the experience. • Becker Landgraf Riesling Trocken 2011

Binny's 4/2015. The 2015 Riesling experiment continues. Successfully. I loved it. Ask your wine merchant to show you the way to dry German/French/Alsace Riesling. It took me forever to ask, but glad I did. Just a rookie so I will continue to ask. German labels...so difficult to comprehend on your own, and yes I understand Trocken, but still. Read More

  • Oxl Rheinhessen Off Dry Dornfelder 2013

A Tasting Room Quarterly selection. Too young, too fruity, and too sweet for my tastes, but did go well with a bit of marinated and grilled pork. A rather brash nose opens with youth, a hint of baking yeast, and alcohol. After that, some hints of chocolate, cherry, and leather, then on to a strawberry jelly fruit bomb. I am sure it will be much ... Read More
