Rheingau Wine

The Rheingau is a major German wine-producing region that is located along the Rhine and Main rivers. It is considered by some to be the home of the Riesling grape. Indeed, that grape is often referred to as “Johannisberg Riesling” in other countries, after the Rheingau village of the same name.

In 1983, several top Rheingau estates, seeing that the poor dry wines that were commonly sold at the time may threaten their own superior wines, created the Association of Charta. Any wine bearing the organization’s double-arch symbol is subject to extremely high standards and must be dry.

Pinot Noir was brought to the Rheingau at about the same time that Clos Vougeot was being founded in Burgundy -- during the Middle Ages. To this day, many examples from the Rheingau are world class.

  • Balthasar Ress Riesling Trocken Von Unserm 2010

Shy on the nose with lightly stony notes over peach pit and wildflower aromas that have a slight green herb edge. This starts out a bit. tight, acid driven and lean on entry though it gains weight and power in the mouth. The texture really is quite fine showing richness without sweetness on the mid-palate while delivering some lovely walnut infle... Read More

  • Edition Maximilian Riesling Spätlese 2009

Golden straw hue, aromas of dried flowers and stone fruits; restrained fruit notes of white peach, apple and orange honey with a lingering sweetness across a thin body. Probably best with spicy Asian foods. Read More

  • Hans Lang Riesling Trocken 2009

The nose showed lemon and lime zests with a floral breeze and hints of green stems. On the palate, it was intense but very juicy with spiced florals and lemon, which turned softer toward the close. It finished dry yet still mouth-watering and citrusy fresh. This was a remarkably balanced and enjoyable Riesling that continued to blossom throug... Read More

  • Riesling Kabinett Rheingau Prinz Von Hessen 2009

A lot of mineral water notes on the nose along with a little smoky tone, some waxy fruit notes and a dusting of white pepper. On the palate, this is a fairly dry Kabinett with plenty of richness for the genre, more of a halbtrocken in style. Theres a touch of nuttiness to the fruit early on that leads to a raw quince and pithy, citrus flavored m... Read More

  • Leitz Rudesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Spatlese Trocken 2009

Tight nose shows subtle but fresh notes of white flowers, minerals and pithy white fruits, with a touch of almond brittle over top. Tense and tight on the palate, this shows on the drier side with wonderful balancing acidity supporting white peach and green plum flavors with a hint of sweet pear thrown in and perhaps a twist of orange zest. Yes ... Read More

  • Hans Lang Riesling Trocken 2009

Rather reticent on the nose, this displays low notes of dried citrus fruits, slate, white pepper and some creamy, golden berry top notes. Bright on entry with slate and quince flavors leading the way. On the mid-palate, this is very well balanced and shows an elegance that belies its size. Theres plenty of richness here and a texture that flirts... Read More

  • Schloss Vollrads Riesling Erstes Gewächs 2008

This review is for the Kabinett wine not the Erstes Gewachs. Somehow the title got changed. Nice acid balance with a good amount of mineral, sets this wine apart from the less expensive Kabinetts. Nice fruit but fades a bit with air, indicating a limited shelf life. A nice wine from a very good vintage; for drinking until 2016. My rating -- 91 Read More
