Rheingau Wine

The Rheingau is a major German wine-producing region that is located along the Rhine and Main rivers. It is considered by some to be the home of the Riesling grape. Indeed, that grape is often referred to as “Johannisberg Riesling” in other countries, after the Rheingau village of the same name.

In 1983, several top Rheingau estates, seeing that the poor dry wines that were commonly sold at the time may threaten their own superior wines, created the Association of Charta. Any wine bearing the organization’s double-arch symbol is subject to extremely high standards and must be dry.

Pinot Noir was brought to the Rheingau at about the same time that Clos Vougeot was being founded in Burgundy -- during the Middle Ages. To this day, many examples from the Rheingau are world class.

  • Latitude 50 Pinot Noir 2007

This wine is a great value for pinot noir. From Germany, where they know a bit about growing this grape, this wine has perfect aromas of red fruit plus a very attractive earthiness (I am thinking mushroomy). I am a fan of German Pinot, and this is a bargain being such a good example. Straight up delicious.(on the other hand, I can't seem to find... Read More

  • Weingut Josef Leitz Riesling Kabinett Rüdesheimer Klosterlay 2007

Pale straw color in the glass. On the nose you get pears, apples, and floral notes. This wine has great pear, apple, and citrus flavors with some mineral notes as well. Smooth, light body with delicate sweetness. This wine starts off with rich smoothness then gains crispness towards the finish as the acidity shows. There is a nice balance w... Read More

Tight and not giving much on the nose this open slowly offering hint of grapefruit and granite dust. A sweet yet lean attack is followed by a poised mid-palate with nice cut. The acid here really is deftly integrated supporting nice length and thrust on the finish which offers up a nice melange of mineral and floral tones that end with a minty f... Read More

  • Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Graacher Himmelreich 2007

There is a bit of sulfur here but it can't obscure the apricoty fruit with subtle green plum edges. There are light spice and slate tones that add some complexity here. On entry this is downright succulent with a voluptuous feel that leads to a liquid mineral/quartz midpalate. The backend is very lean and crisp leading to a fine, long, focused m... Read More
