Rheingau Wine

The Rheingau is a major German wine-producing region that is located along the Rhine and Main rivers. It is considered by some to be the home of the Riesling grape. Indeed, that grape is often referred to as “Johannisberg Riesling” in other countries, after the Rheingau village of the same name.

In 1983, several top Rheingau estates, seeing that the poor dry wines that were commonly sold at the time may threaten their own superior wines, created the Association of Charta. Any wine bearing the organization’s double-arch symbol is subject to extremely high standards and must be dry.

Pinot Noir was brought to the Rheingau at about the same time that Clos Vougeot was being founded in Burgundy -- during the Middle Ages. To this day, many examples from the Rheingau are world class.

  • Schloss Vollrads Estate Kabinett Rheingau Riesling 2011

    Snoothrank:

Picked this up at Jubilation. Opens with interesting scent of spice and vanilla, then moves toward honey, peach, apricot, kiwi, and a slight white pepper spiciness. On the sweet side, but wonderfully balanced, round and smooth. Had alone, but suspect it would be fantastic with food. Terrific price point for the quality. Read More

  • Edition Maximilian Riesling Spätlese 2009

    Snoothrank:

Awful - agree with the previous review that this tastes very oxidized. Very acidic, bad flavor. Not at all like a traditional Riesling, more like a very bad Chardonnay or Pinot gris. Will ruin a dinner party - do not serve to guests. Read More

  • Hans Lang Pinot Noir Edition Maximilian 2008

    Snoothrank:

Really didn't enjoy this wine - might want to let it sit out for awhile to let it open up as much as possible. Lot of alcohol on the nose, very acidic but fruity/bright taste, and smelled kind of funky after being opened. Wouldn't buy this wine again. This in no way compares to Pinots from California. • Faust Martinsthaler Wildsau Riesling Kabinett Rheingau Germany 2008

    Snoothrank:

Impressive right out of the gate! Perfect acid balance; beautiful nose of petrol, resin, honey and some floral notes. Sappy with lots of extract. Starts to fall apart with much air so it will not age more than another year. A great vintage and this wine reflects that. My rating 91-92 Read More

  • For whites, there is a huge variety as already pointed out.  If you like ... ... style is sweeter and the Rheingau less so.Try these styles from the USA or other sources that do not necessarily include France.  Just be warned that New World (where we are) is not the same as the Old Country. If only two grapes are chosen, go with Chardonnay and ...
