Like the Ruwer region, wine from the Saar district (along the lower course of the Saar River, in Rhineland-Palatinate) is particularly dependent on the overall quality of the vintage typically only 4 years out of every 10 producing a worthwhile set of wines. The wines that do come out of these warm vintages are noted for their apple-like freshness and steely mineral notes. The most ideal vintages allows harvest to take place between late October and mid November where the grapes can develop enough sugar to produce floral and honeyed notes

  • Geist Trocken Saar Germany Riesling 2014

A Tasting Room Selection. Clear Golden Silver in the Glass. Opens with Spicy Bread Yeast; then Honey, Melon, and Blueberry; then Lemon Mint Honey; Much carries over to the palate. Medium Acidity, little sweetness, Softens in the mouth, becoming a bit of vanilla pear. Great little Food Wine. Read More

  • Well Al, that all depends on you. The vintage wasn't too bad - they had ... like Erste Lage in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region and Erstes Gewächs and Grosses Gewächs elsewhere. They're supposed to be the equivalent of Grand Cru designations in Burgundy, but whatever. They are picked at Spatlese level and fermented completely dry.To make things eas... Read More

  • Reverchon Saar Riesling Riesling Tracken 2012

A Lot 18 Quarterly Selection. A strange, but not unpleasant meaty/yeasty/umami taste/smell. Crisp green apple and a bit of lime, full mouth feel, and long finish. Off dry and good acidity. Had this alone, but image it would be quite good with food. Read More

Hofgut 2011 Saar Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Ries Sekt BrutErich Weber, grinning from ear to ear, calls this "100% Riesling Winzersekt" presumably to differentiate it from the boatloads of Sekt produced from lesser grape varieties by massive operations. • Dr. Loosen Dr. L Mosel Riesling Qba 2012

After seeing this QbA get rave reviews in the Wine Spectator, I decided to try it. Citrus nose and good acid but this wine lacks the perfume of a 91 point wine. It also lacks the richness and fruit of a good German Riesling. Somewhat simple and not worth the money. Your money would be better spent on a $15 Kabinett. My rating-- 86 Read More

  • Hey Aura,I am actually now the newest Snoothling I think (my term, so ... me are those from the Mosel Saar Ruwer region, sometimes people just say the Mosel region.  Great, cracking crisp and dry Rieslings that are perfection with food.Another outstanding white that you may also like if it's the dry German wines you like is the Gruner Veltliner...
