Franconia (Franken) is a wine region in Bavaria, Germany. Though to most people Bavaria is synonymous with beer, there is a rich viticultural history in the region, dating back at least to Roman times. In the Medieval era, a document dated in the 770s records a winery that was a gift from Charlemagne to the Fulda monastery. Throughout Germany, as in most of Europe at the time, it was the various religious orders who promoted wine production. This is also home to the famous Steinwein, from the famous Würzburger Stein vineyard.
 
Franconia is divided into three subregions (Bereich), which follow the Main river: Maindreieck (the “Main Triangle”) the largest, Mainviereck the warmest and best suited for red grapes, and Steigerwald along the Alpine forest.
