German Wine

Germany is the producer of some of the most admired wines in the world. These are its Rieslings, both sweet and dry, from top sites and producers. Though these wines typically have the most delicate and elegant of frames, they support incredible intensity, purity of fruit, and nuanced expression of terroir. It’s doubtful that any other wine, except perhaps the greatest Burgundy, can send wine writers into such fits of lyrical frenzy.

Germany has been known for its great Rieslings for hundreds of years. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the prestige and prices Germany’s Rhine wines equalled those of the best Bordeaux.

Germany is also known for the travesty that is Liebfraumilch. That stuff became common -- but mostly as an export -- after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by two world wars.

Particularly after World War II, many growers adopted early-ripening, high-yielding hybrids such as Muller-Thurgau, which edged out the noble Riesling grape. These low-quality grapes Read more »

Germany on Snooth

  • What I find really different about German wines is that unlike other countries, the best producers are not all known. In Bordeaux, California, Burgundy, Oregon etc, it is pretty much known who produces the best wines. Even though there are many famous wineries in Germany producing a high quality product, there are many unknown wineries making gr...

  • Dr. Beckermann Riesling Liebfraumilch 2008

    Snoothrank:

Did not see a vintage on my bottle and and it looked different than the picture. Screw top. Soft white fruits like pear, not overly sweet or powerful. Good price point. A bit out of character for Riesling, but enjoyable. Read More

  • Weingut Fritz Haag Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett Mosel 2015

    Snoothrank:

Creamy tropical fruit aromas of banana and mango with mixed blossom potpourri and the faintest hint of lemon on the nose. Excellent body and a pleasant zip of acidity support an off dry palate with ripe tangerine and pink lady apple, a bit of citrus again creeping through towards the finish. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Brioche and lemon meringue aromas on the nose with a touch of melon and mango. With prickly acidity and off dry sweetness, this is juicy on the palate with ripe grape and apple juice notes, a fresh tangerine mid palate and a candied green apple finish. Read More

  • Wittmann 100 Hills Dry Riesling Rheinhessen 2015

    Snoothrank:

Mineral steeliness, wet slate and lemon notes on the razor sharp, serious nose. A bit softer on the palate but still quite sharp, this brings notes of lemon and green melon, green apple and a bright acidity that keeps the palate zesty, minerally and fresh with a crisp refreshing body and a staccato finish. • Robert Weil Riesling Tradition 2015

    Snoothrank:

Clear peach and melon aromas on the nose. Juicy acidity and a fresh lemon zest bite greets the palate with green apple and pear flavors and a tart, brisk finish. There's a vein of floral sweet fruit through the core here that balances the acidity quite well. Very pleasant. Read More

  • The trend toward trocken in Germany has been going on for over 30 year now and I'm still not impressed. It's as though Germany wants to be Burgundy. It is rare that I taste a great trocken/halb trocken or feinherb wine. They have trouble competing with the warmer climate dry whites. Most drier German white wines have been under ripe and/or lacki...

  • I spent 6 years in Germany in the Hunsruck mountains at an Air Base in the 1980's and fell in love with the wines from the Mosel, Rhine, and Nahe regions. I would like to find some purveyor of German wines here in Texas that I could purchase some of the wines from those regions consistantly. Anyone with information would be greatly appreciated.

  • I am looking for a nice Spatlese. I was at a home show in Orlando last month and tried a Germany Spatlese that knocked my off my feet. Can someone recommend me a Spatlese or something sweeter from Germany? Thanks
