South West France, or Sud Ouest, is a large expanse that covers several districts within the country, with the exception of Bordeaux, Languedoc, and Rousillon. The Romans were the first to produce wine here, long before Bordeaux vineyards were ever established. In the early Middle Ages, with a now established Bordeaux region, this area was referred to as “High Country.” Both areas would send their goods via tributaries of the main rivers, the Garonne and Dordogne, to other areas off the Atlantic Coast. High Country grapes ripened sooner than in Bordeaux, so the wines could be bottled and sold more quickly, which threatened Bordeaux producers who wanted their piece of the action. In the 13th and 14th century, the Bordelais established the “police des vins” which stipulated that no High Country wine could be sold until most of the Bordeaux wine left port. Barrels of South West wine would sit in storage, fetching much lower prices in the already saturated marketplace once they could Read more »

  • Voyager Estate Chardonnay Margaret River 2004

This is a spectacularly complex chard in the best of the Margaret River. I'd be the first to admit that Aussie Chards are a bit different than their French and California cousins but this one rates well with the US raters and is prized in its homeland. Hard to come by here, and yet on sale for $9.99 a bottle. Ripe and juicy on the nose, there... Read More

  • Okay, I've gotten to the point where I can admit that I love wine. However, I have found that my tastes seem to lean more to the expensive wines. I don't know if it perception or really the taste but given a $20 cab and $50 cab I always seem to lean to the later. The problem is that I can't have a $50 bottle of wine as my every day wine. Wha... Read More

  • Howard Park Shiraz Great Southern Scotsdale 2003

They make great play on the 'old vines' description on the rear label. The grapes for this bottle come are sourced from a single estate in Mount Barker (in the Great Southern region) in Western Australia. The vines were planted in 1974 and are therefore 34 years old. Old vines and extra attention in the vineyard results in a higher quality wine,... Read More

Great floral and fruit aroma, straw color looks very nice in the glass. Flavor doesn't quite live up to the nose, but a nice drinking wine. My 1st taste of a bergerac, I will be coming back for more of this good value, good tasting wine. Read More
