South West France, or Sud Ouest, is a large expanse that covers several districts within the country, with the exception of Bordeaux, Languedoc, and Rousillon. The Romans were the first to produce wine here, long before Bordeaux vineyards were ever established. In the early Middle Ages, with a now established Bordeaux region, this area was referred to as “High Country.” Both areas would send their goods via tributaries of the main rivers, the Garonne and Dordogne, to other areas off the Atlantic Coast. High Country grapes ripened sooner than in Bordeaux, so the wines could be bottled and sold more quickly, which threatened Bordeaux producers who wanted their piece of the action. In the 13th and 14th century, the Bordelais established the “police des vins” which stipulated that no High Country wine could be sold until most of the Bordeaux wine left port. Barrels of South West wine would sit in storage, fetching much lower prices in the already saturated marketplace once they could Read more »

  • Clairault Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Estate 2004

Showing its Western Australian provenance with a little less fleshiness (when compared to the Dusty Dog). A wine still offering a rush of up-front black forest fruit but in a drier, gravelly-textured palate. An inky long finish with a touch of plum and spicey oak. Read More

  • Château Montus Tannat Blend Madiran 2003

June 2009 tasting of Montus 2003: deep purple, little sign of ageing. Hugely complex on the nose - meaty, dry, spicy. Palate: full body, lots of tannin, some sweetness, medium acidity. Lots of oak coming through. Liquorice, blackberry finish. Long finish. An amazingly enjoyable wine that can be enjoyed over the next up to 5 years (glad I have 4 b... Read More

  • Rials Dom de la Chanade 2008

Certainly something different. By fragrance you wouldnt know of it's origin. Reminiscent of a cross between New Zealand Sauv Blanc, South African Chenin Blanc and White Bordeaux. The nose explodes with lemon zest and citrus fruits with a dab of honey. Acidity is bright but not as tart as a Sauvy. Hints of straw with a clean finish. Bet you can'... Read More
