South West France, or Sud Ouest, is a large expanse that covers several districts within the country, with the exception of Bordeaux, Languedoc, and Rousillon. The Romans were the first to produce wine here, long before Bordeaux vineyards were ever established. In the early Middle Ages, with a now established Bordeaux region, this area was referred to as “High Country.” Both areas would send their goods via tributaries of the main rivers, the Garonne and Dordogne, to other areas off the Atlantic Coast. High Country grapes ripened sooner than in Bordeaux, so the wines could be bottled and sold more quickly, which threatened Bordeaux producers who wanted their piece of the action. In the 13th and 14th century, the Bordelais established the “police des vins” which stipulated that no High Country wine could be sold until most of the Bordeaux wine left port. Barrels of South West wine would sit in storage, fetching much lower prices in the already saturated marketplace once they could Read more »

  • Colombelle White Blend Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne 2007

Very nice structure to this wine. This is the first wine I have tried that is made with a large percentage of the tannat grape (60%) and it was an interesting experience. Very concentrated dark fruit flavors with a definite hint of coffee. Somewhat firm tannins. I would like to try more wines based on this grape. Read More

  • Château Pecot Cahors Tentation 2004

This baby needs a bit of time in the decanter, but boy does she open up nicely! Lovely deep purplish color, full of fruit and a little must on the nose with a hint of minerality. Tannins are well-structured and provide a long finish. Really enjoyed this, and a refreshing change up from the New World Malbecs. Read More

  • Château de Haute-Serre Malbec Blend Cahors 2002

There's a lot of age on the nose. Good acids in the mouth and nice fruits (plums and bitter cherries), its a touch tart on the finish, and has a really leathery component. Not bad for the price. Read More

  • Ringbolt Ring Bolt Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River 2006

I can't get past the bell peppery/eucalyptus astringency here. It remained closed up and herby even after several days. Some tasters enjoyed it but it never displayed any real fruit of spice like I had hoped for. Read More
