Gascony Wine

Gascony, or Gascogne, is a large region in southwest France that encompasses such appellations as Madiran and Jurancon, as well as the Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne. The reason for the Anglicized name is that, in the Middle Ages, this area part of Aquitaine and thus under British rule.

  • Domaine des Cassagnoles Gascogne Sauvignon Met Schroefdop 2010

Great summer sipper from southwest France. Plenty of intense citrus fruits, with white grapefruit dominating the mid-palate. Has a flinty/minerally edge that cleans the tongue and holds a nice finish. Read More

  • Rose l'Escargot 2011

This smells of tomatoes, herbs, strawberries and green spices; a lovely combination of fruity and savory. Soft up front then turning nicely edgy with acidity that just pokes through the base of red currant, tomato and watermelon fruit on the palate. Theres a slight tinge of tannin as well, making this a bit grippy. That grip lingers over the fai... Read More

  • L'Escargot Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Nicely aromatic, this combines some of the more overt grassy notes of New World Sauv Blancs with the soft citrus fruit and soil tones of the Old World. A touch soft perhaps though not really lacking acidity, this is clear and fresh on the palate, with the acidity popping more due to the lack of richness than a truly acidic nature. Very light and... • Château Laffitte-Teston Madiran 2009

Drank this with a steak sandwich. Pours a very deep and dark purple color with some dark red hues around the edges. As this decants, some decent amounts of cherries, red berries and some earthiness. Starts off with some dry cherries hitting the palate first and lasting throughout the tasting. In the middle and on the back end there is some e... Read More

  • Domaine de St Lannes Cotes de Gascogne 2010

My first Colombard, Smells a little of the ocean, oysters with the saltiness along with the sweetness of pear and green apples. It is medium bodied with the richness but not overwhelming. The crispness is refreshing but it is smooth with fruit of green apples, apricots, pineapple (wonderful!). Great value wine for $7! I had it with kale lightly ... Read More

  • Madiran Pierre Laplace 2004

I bought a couple of cases of this Madiran in 2007 mostly because I was looking for a really dark and tannic wine that I figured had the best heart-health qualities. Also, the price was unbeatable.I drank a couple of bottles over a period of a few days for the heart benefits but the tannins finally got to me and I didn't touch it again until the... Read More
