Gaillac is a historic wine region in the Sud-Ouest (South-West) province of France. This is one of the oldest regions in the country, perhaps predating the Romans. It was once a very prolific wine center, and its sparkling wines, arguably predating those of Champagne, were well regarded in the Middle Ages. But there was scant interest in replanting here following the late 19th century Phylloxera outbreak. It was only in the later part of the 20th century that the area along the Tarn river was once again appreciated for its favorable climate and diverse soils, not to mention more affordable plots compared to some of its famous neighbors.

Traditional indigenous varietals are favored here, although the ever-popular Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Gamay are also grown. For whites, Len de L’el, Mauzac and Muscadelle must comprise 50% of the blend with smaller amounts of Ondenc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
