The Savoie appellation was created in 1973 although there has been viticulture here for centuries. It covers a very large area incorporating four departments south of Lake Geneva close to the Swiss and Italian borders in the foothills of the Alps but is responsible for less than 1% of France's total wine production. It mainly produces white wines though there are some red, roses and sparkling ones. 16 villages including Apremont are allowed to append their name to the Vin de Savoie name.A large part of the Apremont and Abymes communes were buried in limestone and scree by a massive and catastrophic landslide on November 24th 1248 when part of Mount Granier collapsed and many of today's vineyards are located on top of the debris. There was considerable loss of life and the name 'Apremont ' roughly translates as 'bitter mountain '
