Tavel Wine

Tavel is an appellation in the Southern Rhone that has the distinction of only being permitted to produce dry rosé -- no red or white wines are allowed. The red grape varieties used are Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, and Calitor, and the white grapes are Clairette, Clairette Rose, Bourboulenc, and Picpoul. grapes are used exclusively to make rosé wines. Vines have been cultivated in the area since the 5th century BC. Planted by the Greeks, the vineyard expanded under the Romans. Located on a major communication route between the oppidum in Roquelmaure and Nimes, Tavel was the ideal location to develop. Various artifacts from this period have been found, including pieces of decorated amphora depicting grapes. However, the name villa tavellis, which would later become Tavel, appeared for the first time in 13th century writings. In the middle of the 14th century, Pope Innocent VI, who had a particular predilection for the wines of the Rhône’s right-bank and had Read more »

  • Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Tavel Rose 2016

The Lafond Roc-Epine 2016 is just what one expects of a Tavel; namely, a much deeper colour reminiscent of cranberry juice (perhaps a bit lighter), with a prominent scent of sour strawberry and roses. Entry is quite powerful for a rose; there is a stem-like almond bitterness on the finish with more unripe strawberry. Very rich. For a Tavel at th... Read More

  • Diego, we have also been enjoying Rose this summer, more so than usual thanks ... we enjoyed some excellent Tavel. From a short bit of research, oak aging rose is not normal but also not unheard of, but a rose of Malbec is something I haven't had the pleasure of trying - yet.Tonight we cooked up a large pot of chili that simmered on the stove ... • Sorry, haven't been on here for a couple days so I thought it was time to ... ... Domaine de la Mordoree (Tavel) and a '10 Parisy (Emmanuel Reynaud).  The first three showed really nice notes of bright cherry and subtle strawberry with mouth watering acidity.  The Parisy was a bit past its prime and had lost most of its brightness. We're just... • Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Tavel Rosé 2012

This respected rosé reminds one of a phenolphthalein solution (added to a base): darker than salmon but with deeper notes than mere pink. Attractive in the glass and full of strawberry, rhubarb and (perhaps) red huckleberry on the nose. Some tannin on the finish, but a rush of red fruits on the palate such as unripe strawberry. A palate cleansi... Read More
