Located on the right bank of the Rhone, just across the river from Chateaneuf du Pape, Lirac used to make mostly rose, just like nearby Tavel. Today, it is better known for its reds, though rose and a little white wine is also made. Red (or rose) Lirac must be at least 40% Grenache, with Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsaut, and Carignan making up the difference. They can represent great value for lovers of the southern Rhone’s wines. White Lirac is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Ugni Blanc, Picpoul, and Grenache Blanc. It is typically aromatic and full-bodied.

  • Alain Jaume Lirac Roquedon 2005

    Snoothrank:

Dark ruby leaning towad garnet in the glass. Aromas of brush, earth, turned soil, black tea, violet, lavender, blackberry and dark red berry fruit. Some plum notes. • Domaine Grand Veneur Clos Sixte Lirac 2010

    Snoothrank:

Here is a wine from the right side of the Rhone that is already ready to drink; yes, there is some residual tannin (Mourvedre, no doubt) but not to worry - the rich cherry-kirsch flavour will not diminish in any way for a few years at least. Good structure, balance and backbone: a truly delicious wine for drinking now through 2016. 89-91 points ... Read More
