Located on the right bank of the Rhone, just across the river from Chateaneuf du Pape, Lirac used to make mostly rose, just like nearby Tavel. Today, it is better known for its reds, though rose and a little white wine is also made. Red (or rose) Lirac must be at least 40% Grenache, with Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsaut, and Carignan making up the difference. They can represent great value for lovers of the southern Rhone’s wines. White Lirac is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Ugni Blanc, Picpoul, and Grenache Blanc. It is typically aromatic and full-bodied.

  • Nice description Vino. I'll get around to drinking some whites later this ... this year.Finishing up this Lirac tonight. Not as good as the Jean Marie, but still fruity and fun. Fairly bold and jammy. Mostly plum and ripe blackberry, raspberry and currants. Some spice, but I have trouble deciphering the oak in a lot of the wine I drink. I know... Read More

  • Chateau de Montfaucon Baron Louis Lirac 2010

Lirac - a fine wine in its own right, just across the Rhone from Chateauneuf-de-Pape, is nevertheless a cheap alternative to CdP. This wine, for instance, from the very good 2010 vintage, exudes blueberry in spades and introduces cherry, cola, dark chocolate and (of course) blueberry to the palate - which has great staying power. Its power dim... Read More

  • Alain Jaume Lirac Roquedon 2005

Dark ruby leaning towad garnet in the glass. Aromas of brush, earth, turned soil, black tea, violet, lavender, blackberry and dark red berry fruit. Some plum notes. Richly textured on the palate with kirsch, Chambord and rich macerated berry flavors. Powerful acid gives it a touch of heat over softening tannin. Surprisingly richly fruited, ... Read More

Wonderful perfume on the nose, rich and floral with red berry, lavender, violet, currant, rose petal, red berry and cherry. Some stone aromas. Sexy and feminine on the palate with delicate fruit flavors. Red berry. Luscious currant and red berry over white pepper. Light spice. Zesty and pretty with good acid.89 pts.3/9/13 Read More
