Gigondas Wine

Gigondas is a village and wine appellation in the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains in France. This is an all red wine-producing region, with roots in ancient Roman culture (at a time when white wine was also made here). The name derives from the Latin Jocunditas, which means “great pleasure,” as it had been a sort of vacation haven for Roman soldiers. Wine production enjoyed a quiet growth through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. A Gigondas won a prestigious gold medal at an agricultural fair in Paris in 1894. However, for much of the 1800s and early 1900s, the juice was often sent to other parts of France to bulk out weaker wines. Quality has improved greatly since then. It became an official Cotes du Rhone Villages AOC in the 1950s, and struck out to become its own AOC in 1971.

The vineyards are situated high into the Montmirail slopes, with limestone soils in some parts and sandier, more free-draining soils in others. It’s noticeably cooler than nearby Read more »

Gigondas on Snooth

  • Tardieu-Laurent Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2007

    Snoothrank:

When the Grenache knows how to stay fresh.Seductive nose of maturity. Kirches red fruit aromas, or even of raspberry jam. At the agitation more fresh (Sage) herbs, that dried (thyme). A hint of licorice. In the mouth, what surprises - me - is the freshness with the absence of drought due to alcohol. Would be almost silky as I rarely use this ter... Read More

  • Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas 2010

    Snoothrank:

It took an hour in decanter before the nose began to show intense, yet focused blackberry fruit, fresh cedar, pepper and earthy minerals. On the palate it remained tight yet still revealed dark velvety fruit, violet candies, herbs, dark chocolate and hot spice. The finish was palate coating with a hint of drying tannin. This wine needs a few mor... Read More

  • Lavau Gigondas France Rhone 2010

    Snoothrank:

The nose showed fresh blackberries, violet floral tones, slate dust, pepper notes and a hint of spiced cookie. On the palate, it was at first rich, yet turned elegant and juicy with pure black fruits, licorice and hints of mountain herbs. The finish was lasting with blackberry fruit and violet candies lingering long after the close. (90 points) Read More

  • Domaine du Grapillon d'Or Gigondas 2010

    Snoothrank:

The nose showed spicy blackberry fruit with lavender, black pepper, dried meats and crushed rocks. On the palate, it was like velvet over a stone-structure yet juicy throughout with black fruits, spice and hints of black licorice. Berries, pepper and olive tapenade lingered on the medium-long finish with a tinge of heat. (92 points) Read More
