Gigondas Wine

Gigondas is a village and wine appellation in the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains in France. This is an all red wine-producing region, with roots in ancient Roman culture (at a time when white wine was also made here). The name derives from the Latin Jocunditas, which means “great pleasure,” as it had been a sort of vacation haven for Roman soldiers. Wine production enjoyed a quiet growth through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance. A Gigondas won a prestigious gold medal at an agricultural fair in Paris in 1894. However, for much of the 1800s and early 1900s, the juice was often sent to other parts of France to bulk out weaker wines. Quality has improved greatly since then. It became an official Cotes du Rhone Villages AOC in the 1950s, and struck out to become its own AOC in 1971.

The vineyards are situated high into the Montmirail slopes, with limestone soils in some parts and sandier, more free-draining soils in others. It’s noticeably cooler than nearby Read more »

Gigondas on Snooth

  • Chapelle St Arnoux Gigondas 2003

    Snoothrank:

Great value for the money. I agree with several reviews that describe it as rough. It is rough or rustic if you're comparing to a chateauneuf du pape. Good acid. Red and black fruits. Long developing finish. I enjoyed it with a prosciutto, cheeses, and olives picnic. Read More

  • Gigondas Domaine du Grapillon d'Or 1806 Rhone 2005

    Snoothrank:

Grapy with a hint of ginger snaps and brown sugar on the nose. Medium bodied, rich and spicy with a light acidity. Cherries and plums on the palette. Nice refreshing finish. Amazing for the price. Read More

  • Perrin & Fils Gigondas la Gille 2004

    Snoothrank:

This is easily one of the best Rhone wines I have ever tasted! It is bigger and better than several quite more expensive CDP's (up to $45/bottle). It has all the usual "garrigue" of the grenache-based Rhone wines: earthy, smoky, complex; but it also has tremendous fruit both on the nose and the palate. This is a special wine and a better value. • ... Chateneauf du Pape, Cornas, Gigondas are just some of the styles I love. While shopping for these wines late last year, my salesperson told me to look through the catalog for some of the older vintages that they still had in stock. I was amazed at how much cheaper I could buy some of these older vintages versus the new releases.Instead of p... Read More

  • Domaine de Cabasse Gigondas 2004

    Snoothrank:

The great value has a nose filled with intense cherry aromas. The complex, gutsy flavors include intense cherry, coffee, leather, licorice and baking spices all followed by a long spicy finish. For my taste, this is truly a great value. Why spend 30-40 when this is just as good. A great find. Read More
