The Cotes du Vivarais is a Southern Rhone appellation created in 1999,although viticulture here goes back to at least the Romans, for red, white and rose wines[but 80% are red] from 14 communes on the west bank of the Rhone river south of the town of Montelimar. Most of the vineyards are on a limestone plateau bisected by the Ardeche gorge.Wine production is dominated by the Vignerons Ardechois co-operative group sometimes called U.V.I.C.A.
