Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • For March, my tasting group explored the length of the Rhône valley.  Probably for consistency of quality, one of our best tastings to date with just about all o the wines showing well and being universally liked by all.  I was lucky to find/have access to some older vintages from estate sales and store cellars, so it made for a fun night.  Here... Savory, aromatic herbs on the nose and is driven by aromas of red fruit, but has black berry fruit as well. Rich and lush. It's pretty and luscious on the palate with red berries, savory herbs and truffle hints. Really lovely wine. Lavender and other florals. Complex and layered. Very tasty red and black berry fruit. • Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf du Pape le Petit Mont 2010

Red Rhone BlendOptions1/15/2013 - I LIKE THIS WINE: 91 points (Edit)On the nose I found ripe berries, fig, tobacco, and a hint of mint giving it an alluring airiness. On the palate, it was juicy, ripe--fun, with blackberry jam, cherry, spice notes and a soft, plush personality. The finish was long with staining blackberry fruit and a hint of tan... Read More
