Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

Châteauneuf-du-pape on Snooth

  • Well, the opera Salome was quite a performance.  We were in the first row, right behind the orchestra pit.  The conductor's head was at our level, perhaps 3 feet from me.  I've never been so close to a conductor while he led the orchestra.  That also put us very close to the stage of course, so we saw every detail but of course the opera was per... • QUOTEPardon my contrarianism, AOK, but are your really denigrating transparency ... grapes are involved. Chateauneuf Du Pape is an odd duck among the other wine regions in France. Most regions are legally allowed to grow only one grape. Some are allowed more than one: perhaps 2 or 4. But CdP had 18. 18?? What's even more odd is that they don't ... Read More

  • Chateau de Vaudieu Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010

    Snoothrank:

Mighty fine CdP. Crushed black cherry, subtle chocolate and a touch of anise on the palate, with a slight hint of menthol on the nose. There's medium grained tannins along with some medium acidity to balance out the ripe dark fruit on the medium to long finish. Read More

  • RBA, don't ask me or OT whether you should open a Malbec.  But as for ... a 2009 Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du Pape, part of a stash of 2009s I bought at hefty discounts.  (2010 for the long term, 2007 is overrated, 2009 got discounted when the hype about 2010s, which is not inaccurate, started, and 2006 if you can find them--I actually ...
