Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • AOA, I've had fun doing some side by sides with Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Cotes du Rhone Villages, although Chateauneuf du Pape can be a bit of a different beast. To compliment EMarks post above we opened the Apsara Rivers Reach Sauv Blanc this evening. This is not about grapefruit but more subtle and balanced citrus and stone fruit. • V V - Glad to hear that 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon was still drinkable.  I am reluctant to hang onto wines past the 15 year point for fear that they will be too far gone to enjoy.  Sometimes we get a wine where the wine club says they should be good for the next 15 years but usually the tasting notes say 5-7 years will show improvement (downhill fr...
