Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape was one of the first appellations founded when that system was set up in the early 1930's.It is for red and white wines [though 95% are red]from four communes around the village of that name in the Avignon/Orange area of the southern Rhone valley where it is the best-known  and prestigious appellation. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new palace.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • Domaine Font de Michelle Cuvée Etienne Gonnet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2005

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep ruby in the glass, a bit darker than usual but in my view an ideal color. The nose presents aromas of ripe fruit, plum, cherry and dates, overlaid with some wonderful dried floral and spice notes. The taste is a nice rush of sweet fruit up front, a combination of berries and dried fruit that transition to some lovely spice n... Read More

  • Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape is wonderful; perhaps the "rolled pebbles" are the answer. In any case, this well-priced wine is redolent of strawberries (yes, somewhat like a deep Burgundy), smooth and food friendly; ready to roll, deep and finishing with the headiness we have come to expect from this region. 89.
