Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • For some people, the food and wine pairing is an art and of utmost ... like ... like Grenache/Syrah, or even Chateauneuf du Pape.  Beef can take on Cab sav, etc.  This may be a little much to consider, so my advice would be to ask your server or sommelier (if they have one) as to a wine pairing with your meal choice.&nbs Read More

  • Cooked up some nice veal piccata, pasta and sugar snap peas for dinner tonight and popped this bottle. This is a most excellent Chateauneuf-du-Pape blanc at a very reasonable price.  Ripe peach and a bit of some kind of floral note on the nose. Rich, ripe peach, a bit of creme brulee, light touch of butterscotch, somewhat waxy on the tongue, medi... Read More

  • Nice selection of affordable, very drinkable wine in my local small village ... ... wine I chose Valori 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape at the princely sum of 14.5 euros. The CdP has some good independent ratings. • Chateau de Saint Cosme Chateauneuf du Pape 2009

    Snoothrank:

Murky dark plum color. Nose of dried fruit. Very serious hit of candied fruit on entrythink of a combination of cherry and apricot. Then a powdery sensation seems to cover my tongueprobably, from tannin. Back palate sensation is sour and, slightly, bitter. Overall, to me this wine is disjoint and not integrated. Read More

  • Domaine la Roquette Chateaunef-du-Pape 2010

    Snoothrank:

Just over a year ago I put this in my wine fridge...although it may have lasted longer, the correct decision was to drink it now. Lilacs and other spring floral aromas add to the red berry fruits, mellow tannins, earth and acidity - which is juicy, but in line with smooth, velvety profile of the wine. Sumptuous wine - drink now - Paul. 91 points Read More
