Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape is wonderful; perhaps the "rolled pebbles" are the answer. In any case, this well-priced wine is redolent of strawberries (yes, somewhat like a deep Burgundy), smooth and food friendly; ready to roll, deep and finishing with the headiness we have come to expect from this region. 89-90. • Try AMON-Ra from Oz, too. Greg's Quilceda Creek and Amarone seconded. 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape also qualifies.Do we want to talk about late-harvest Zins?  ;-)Another approach is to take this list and target specific regions and (older) vintages that might fall under that price limit. If not these vineyards, maybe some others in close proximity t... Read More

  • Well, the example that comes most quickly to mind is VJB Cellars. • Les Clefs d'Or Chateauneuf du Pape 2009

    Snoothrank:

This little gem from the 2009 vintage is perfect for drinking now: the nose evokes sweet cherry on a bed of wild herbs and a hint of cake spice, and the entry is cherry with a touch of cola and allspice. Finish is soft and slightly off-dry... perfect balance with mild tannin. 89. Read More
