Châteauneuf-du-pape Wine

Chateauneuf du Pape

Chateauneuf du Pape is the best-known appellation in the Southern Rhone. It takes its name from the Pope’s residence in Avignon during the 14th Century; it translates roughly as “the Pope’s new castle.”

The wines are typically full-bodied, ripe reds, though some white wine is made from Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, and Bourboulenc. About 13 grape varieties are permitted, but Grenache is the most important by a wide margin. Other widely planted ones include Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsaut. Ch. de Beaucastel, one of the best producers of Chateaneuf du Pape, makes a point of cultivating all 13 permitted varieties.

  • Tardieu-Laurent Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2013

Light and fresh top notes redolent of juicy pear, green apple and toast with hints of more tropical fruits. Gorgeous bright lemon, green apple and chunky mango notes in the mouth, this pops with acidity on entry and keeps up the zestiness through the finish, where touches of cream and butter mellow the finish, which is oaked and very much the ca... • Guigal Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2009

Pretty decent but not great CdP from Guigal. Nice dark berries on the nose along with a touch of tar. More dark fruit on the tongue - ripe plum, blackberry, black cherry, a touch of anise and medium acidity. The tannins are a bit tight and grainy, may need more air or more time in the bottle. Was hoping for a bit more complexity but that might c... Read More

  • We enjoyed a nice 2010 J. V. Fleury Chateauneuf-du-Pape tonight with some ribeye steaks.  This GSM blend is 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre.  I suppose it would have been better to wait another few years but it tastes fine right now.  I happened to decant it a few hours and now that I've checked their web site, I see that they recommend... • Les Closiers Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010

This wine was purchased in The Hague to augment the closure of the day spent in Amsterdam. It is about 80% Grenache and exudes the aroma of crushed red currant, cherry whips and Kirsch. A bit untamed on the palate but full of aforesaid red fruit and gentle tannin. Worthy. 89 points. Read More
