Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Chateau de Montfaucon Baron Louis Lirac 2010

    Snoothrank:

Lirac - a fine wine in its own right, just across the Rhone from Chateauneuf-de-Pape, is nevertheless a cheap alternative to CdP. This wine, for instance, from the very good 2010 vintage, exudes blueberry in spades and introduces cherry, cola, dark chocolate and (of course) blueberry to the palate - which has great staying power. Its power dim... Read More

  • Guigal Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

Guigal's Cotes du Rhones (both reds and whites) have exceeded expectations vintage after vintage (at least back to 2003). They consistently rival any wine at this price point. The 2013 CdR blanc, however breaks the streak. Dilute tart flavors dominate. The saving grace is that it was somewhat better after a few hours. Does not bode well for 20... Read More
