Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Clos du Mont-Olivet Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2008

This 2008 (an average vintage) from the reputable Clos du Mont-Olivet has the ... is mature (2016) with a nice Southern Rhone entry of sage, raspberry, strawberry (for some people) and rubber (not in a bad way). Finish is warm, friendly and perfect for the lamb stews of southern France. Decent stuff that could keep through 2019. 88 point Read More

  • Les Halos de Jupiter Cotes du Rhone 2012

The 2012 Halos of Jupiter, reflecting a more usual (ordinary) vintage is slightly less sweet and luscious than the superior years of 2009-2011... but true to its fine Grenache base, it has a rich cherry flan nose and a fairly sweet, viscous cherry entry with a hint of almond bitter on the finish. A find in Cotes du Rhone for the money. 88 points. Read More

  • Tardieu-Laurent Cotes du Rhone Blanc Guy Louis 2013

Delightful tropical aromas of banana and pineapple up front with some citrus lurking as well, mostly lemon and lemon candy. Nicely tart in the mouth, round and full with an oily texture, this is thick and coats the tongue with notes of melon, lemon and butter, finishing with a healthy butter cookie and meringue finish.92 pts Read More

  • I'm really enjoying the tasting notes, too.  I think Red has a style ... ... is banana!  In the southern Rhone, it's used a bit for the reds, although I think that has dropped off more recently.  (I'm guessing on that, but in the late 80s and early 90s, it seemed to hit its peak in S. Rhone).  I'm just not a huge fan of it, but to each his ow... Read More
