Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Rasteau 2005

    Snoothrank:

Christmas day 2015 paired with a Standing Rib Roast. Thank you to my brother for furnishing that lovely piece of beef. This Cotes Du Rhone, had an awful nose to me (however, nobody else complained), but enough muscle to stand up to the main course, with a nice dry lingering finish. Read More

  • Gabriel Meffre Plan de Dieu Côtes du Rhône Villages "Saint Mapalis" 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 Saint Mapalis from the windswept flatland of Plan de Dieu (God's Plan) near Cairanne is excellent. There is the candied blueberry nose with a touch of sagebrush (well, maybe garrigue) and there is a clean, blueberry-infused, metallic entry without harshness or heavy tannin. It lacks only the density of the best villages. Finish is medi... Read More

  • Domaine de Ferrand Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes Cuvee Antique 2012

    Snoothrank:

This wine is exactly the soft, elegant and red fruit dominant profile you want; the overt sweetness is absent, but the leather and silky, soft cranberry-cherry infusion is there. I regret not buying the cases available at the time of purchase. 88 points. Read More

  • Looking through my cellartracker past and present, I've found plenty of ... one of these places - the southern Rhone, Paso Robles, Priorat, which makes sense as Grenache is typically a warm climate grape. Now you have me thinking about a new theme for a future tasting event. We just recently we popped a 2006 Clarendon Hills Grenache Old Vines ... Read More

  • LuckyLucy, let me also welcome you to Snooth!  If you're looking for ... ... I'd suggest an older southern Rhone. Many of the grenache, syrah, mourvedre blends have loads of dark cherry and earth, but may be a bit on the tannic side when young. Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a bit pricey) or Cote rotie may fit the bill.Tonight just seemed like an Oregon...
