Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Domaine Pere Caboche Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Rose 2013

    Snoothrank:

Earthy and stemmy on the nose with hints of cherry fruit and and some tart raspberry accents. Simple and not intense. Opening with fine acids, this quickly turns a little chunky and clumsy with simple fruit that mirrors the nose, a hint of minerality, and a slightly chewy texture. fading fairly quickly on the finish, this is an easy to enjoy qua... • M. Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone Belleruche Rose 2013

    Snoothrank:

A bit leathery, chalky and nutty on the nose with hints of melon and spice adding complexity. A touch sweet on entry but the acid quickly brings this int balance. A touch large scaled and chewy on the palate, this is easy to drink with simple earthy and slightly herbal framed flavors of raspberry and lingonberry on the palate. late arriving mine... Read More

  • Caves Saint-Pierre Châteauneuf-du-Pape le Fiacre du Pape 2010

    Snoothrank:

Despite running it through an aerator and sitting in my glass for thirty minutes; this wine was tight. Good red fruit on the front end, nice acid balance and then some of the greenest tannins I've come across. By the second day the tannins had smoothed out a bit but not much. 87pts. Read More

  • Domaine Lafond Roc-Epine Tavel Rosé 2012

    Snoothrank:

This respected rosé reminds one of a phenolphthalein solution (added to a base): darker than salmon but with deeper notes than mere pink. Attractive in the glass and full of strawberry, rhubarb and (perhaps) red huckleberry on the nose. Some tannin on the finish, but a rush of red fruits on the palate such as unripe strawberry. A palate cleansi... Read More

  • Tavel Domaine Maby la Forcadiere Rhone 2012

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for £12 from a shop in Wiltshire [www.yapp.co.uk ] Tavel is an AOC created in 1936 [although wine production in the area goes back many centuries ] for rose wines from the commune of that name on the west bank of the Rhone river just north of Avignon and opposite Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It is the only AOC in France for ... Read More
