Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • St Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2011

    Snoothrank:

Black berries and a bunch of blue berries dominate the nose with additional oak (slight), vanillin, spice and pepper this is a lush, full mouth wine. Excellent with food, this is only lacking in aftertaste (short), otherwise this typical Saint-Cosme. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More

  • Domaine "La Garrugue" Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine 2012

    Snoothrank:

This was very good - pepper, chocolate, red plum and Bing cherry lead the nose. This is full bodied wine with dark berries, spice and mildly chewy tannins and matching acidity. Well done with a great finish. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More

  • E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rose 2015

    Snoothrank:

Candied watermelon and strawberry aromas with hints of cherry on the nose. This is juicy and chunky in the mouth with mostly red fruit character of cherry and strawberry and hints of baking spice. There's a zip of good acidity as well towards the refreshing approachable finish. Read More

  • Auguste Bessac Gigondas 2009

    Snoothrank:

The Mediterranean world of Gigondas is evident from the first scent of the wine; the redolence of dried grape, sage and spiny scrub which is deep with warm wind at harvest. This Grenache-dominant wine has good tannic structure (backbone) and Aussie-like (Barossa) depth. Powerful - like a good Gigondas should be. Serve with heavy dishes and BB... Read More

Not sure what the blend is on this wine but it's mostly grenache. Fruity with mid range weight, light acidity and light tannins. Not bad wine by any means just very simple. Read More
