Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Domaine du Pere Caboche Chateauneuf du Pape 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fresh and slightly creamy on the nose with lovely aromas of blueberry and raspberry candy framed by hints of hay, paprika and ink along with a light stewed tomato note. Soft and easy on the palate, this shows off that slight stewy tomato note early on the palate but the savory aspects, along with dried floral tones and herbal notes, help to fram... Read More

  • Vrac Cotes du Rhone 2012

    Snoothrank:

Flowers and red fruits jump from the glass greeting the nose here along with some underlying candied and spiced cherry aromas. Cool in the mouth, and yet with sweet fruit up front, this is a touch simple in the mouth but is fresh, clear and actually fills the mouth nicely given some air. Its all red fruit, rather grenache with its size in the mo... Read More

  • Chateau Pesquie Terrasses Ventoux 2012

    Snoothrank:

A touch leafy on the nose then filling with dark raspberry/blackberry aromas along with lovely spicy, herbal base notes and a touch of licorice. Showing a hint of flesh on entry, this fills out gently in the mouth with soft tannins and good supporting acidity supporting clear and fresh red currant and blackberry flavors. Theres a little inheren... Read More

  • Pierre Henri Morel Signargues Cotes du Rhone Villages 2011

    Snoothrank:

Reticent on the nose with clear notes of candied strawberry and blackberry fruits wrapped in hints of leather, dried herbs, grilled meat and licorice. Smooth and moderately rich in the mouth, this really could use a bit more acidity for my palate, though many will appreciate the wines seamless character and slightly weight feel. On the palate on... • Château Beauchene Cotes du Rhone Grande Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

A hint of leathery funk greets the nose followed by lovely layered aromas of dried mushroom, baking spice, candied violet, strawberry, juniper and beef blood. A little weighty and plush in the mouth, this feels just a bit clumsy while it delivers light if fresh flavors of red fruits, raspberry and strawberry with hints of rhubarb and almost a be... • Marrenon Grand Toque Luberon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight and focused on the nose with Syrah driven aromas of blue fruit, fine gently meaty spice notes hints of warm red fruit, cracked pepper and baking spice. Lighter bodied in the mouth than the nose suggest, this shows a lovely transparency on the palate with flavors that like the aromas, are driven by the slightly spicy and gamy nature of Syra... • Domaine de la Janasse le Chastelet Cotes du Rhone 2012

    Snoothrank:

Absolutely fantastic Cotes du Rhone red blend from Domaine Janasse. Perfume on the nose, layers of tangy black and creamy blue berries, sharp and crisp acidity, a touch of black pepper on the back end. This was a steal when we were in Provence at the winery - 9.5 euros! Read More

  • Jean-Luc Colombo la Redonne Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Pretty golden color. Faint and pleasant tropical fruit aromas. Quite light-bodied on the palatealmost watery. Not the fruit that the aromas forecasted. A bit of bitterness. As the wine warms up a bit, though, some more fruit flavor emergesapple as much as anything. Also, viscosity seems to change. An OK wine, but not a great wine. Read More

  • Perrin & Fils Cotes du Rhone Reserve Blanc 2012

    Snoothrank:

There's something just a bit off with this white Rhone blend. A touch of mustiness (TCA?) on the mid-palate with muted white stone fruit and medium acidity. Not bad but not good either. Expected better from the Perrin Family, the 2011 was much better. Read More
