Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

Drank pop and pour. Classic grenache on the nose and fairly translucent in the glass. Medium weight and red fruited in the mouth with some acidity. Finishes with some pretty strong green tannins. Classic in style. We'll see what day two brings.Second day the wine fruit has settled a bit and the acidity has come forward. The green tannins remain.... Read More

  • Les Clefs d'Or Chateauneuf du Pape 2009

    Snoothrank:

This little gem from the 2009 vintage is perfect for drinking now: the nose evokes sweet cherry on a bed of wild herbs and a hint of cake spice, and the entry is cherry with a touch of cola and allspice. Finish is soft and slightly off-dry... perfect balance with mild tannin. 89. Read More

Savory salinity and bright ripe red fruit notes of warm cranberry and strawberry with pleasant spice. This is very expressive in the mouth with tart cranberry and cherry notes, slightly herbal leaf and smoke, with zesty earthy spice on the finish that develops into a smoky finish. Read More
