Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Bernard Latour Domaine de l'Espigouette Vieilles Vignes Côtes du Rhône 2005

This wine has pretty significant earthiness, much more so than your average Cotes du Rhone, which I really liked. Dark fruit and peppery spiciness are also present. Tannins were well balanced in the mix. I think this is a pretty well-made wine, better than the average Cotes du Rhone. Excellent quality to price ratio. Read More

  • St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2005

This a medium bodied Syrah that has a very distinct black pepper taste that appears in the middle and lasts straight through to the finish. Very spicy but not so overpowering that you can't enjoy the other berry flavors that are present in this wine. In addition to the black pepper, this wine has a very meaty mouth feel and taste that truly make... Read More

  • Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Romane Machotte 2004

This is my first Gigondas and I was quite impressed. Although I have little to compare this to I feel like it is a very well-rounded wine. Medium body with good tannins. I noticed hints of pepper and oak with a splash of vanilla. The finish was subtle but very pleasant. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to try a wine from this region. Read More

  • Perrin & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Sinards 2004

Decanted half an hour before serving. A slightly purple color in the glass. On the nose this wine starts off with great fruit accented by earthiness and a trace of floral character. On the palate this wine is an explosion of lush, dark fruits with layers of oak and a slight amount of spiciness. The medium level tannins are refined and do not... Read More

  • Jean-Luc Colombo White Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône les Abeilles 2005

Paid only $9 for this bottle, so I felt it was a good value, even though I didn't love it. Flavors on the palate seemed muted to me, though I drank it alone and not with any food. Wouldn't go out of my way to purchase again. Read More

  • St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2005

This wine starts out with dark fruits and a light pepper scent on the nose. In the mouth this wine is quite spicy with strong pepper and spice on the palate, along with traces of oak as well. A medium-light body with medium tannins that are present but not overly dominating. The finish is long yet balanced with substantial pepper there too. ... Read More
