Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

Southern Rhône on Snooth

  • BL - Our Viking River Cruise down the Rhone last year was a blast, and we tried many wines of Southern France along the way.  I think my favorite was the Burgundy Pinot Noir wines, as they are close to the Oregon Pinot Noir wines we also enjoy. We never visited El Toreo on Fair Oaks Ave in Pasadena, but we were both living in Southern California... • Chateau Unang Ventoux 2010

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in Kent [ ] for £12.50. I bought it because I had previously had a bottle of their special 'La Gardy ' cuvee a couple of years ago and was impressed although this is a more basic offering. It is a blend of grenache, syrah and cinsault though I do not know in what proportions.I sta... Read More

  • Château Pesquié Quintessence 2009

The 2009 Quintessence is a fine wine with balanced, structured flavors of sage, eucalyptus and cherry and notes of smoke and spice on the nose. Elegant, smooth and still capable of a few more years in the bottle, this Ventoux is highly recommended - if you can find the vintage. Though somewhat different in style, better value than many Chateau... Read More

  • Cuvee des 3 Messes Basses 2012

KindredVines offer these TASTING NOTES:Dark garnet in color with purple hues. This wine is an open bouquet combining fruity and peppery aromas which are distinctive of the AOC Ventoux. A well balanced and pleasant wine on the palate with aromas of stewed fruits and hints of cinnamon and clove. Enjoyable fleshy texture and remarkable length. [I a... Read More

  • Chateau de Saint Cosme Chateauneuf du Pape 2009

Murky dark plum color. Nose of dried fruit. Very serious hit of candied fruit on entrythink of a combination of cherry and apricot. Then a powdery sensation seems to cover my tongueprobably, from tannin. Back palate sensation is sour and, slightly, bitter. Overall, to me this wine is disjoint and not integrated. Read More

  • Gigondas la Cave "La Reference" Gigondas 2009

Crap - this developed into a stellar wine. From a relatively shy youngster to a bold, enthusiastic adult this was fantastic. Smokey oak, blackberry and a smattering of red berry fruits, roses, spice and green vegtal characteristics lead to a full fruity, spicey palate that is shock full of tannins and juicy acidity leading to lingering, fruity f...
