Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2011

    Snoothrank:

Layers of nuanced red and dark fruits, cherry and plum with a little dusty earth thrown. Gentle tannins and well balanced acidity allow the elegance of this grenache driven wine to shine. 92 points - drink or hold - Paul Read More

  • Somehow looks like a combo between Southern Rhone and Bordeaux and Northern Italian. Also, then, should ask where's the petit verdot and the cab franc, or the mourvedre and syrah?  Perhaps they could acknowledge their more recent California del Norte wine culture heritage and throw in some Zin as well. One wonders why they avoided Spanish (other... Read More

  • Chateau Pesquie Terrasses Ventoux 2014

    Snoothrank:

Light and effusive at the start this grows with a little time in the glass. Plenty of cherry and red plum with a touch of spice, anise and moderate tannins pair with good acidity and a relatively short but lively aftertaste. Drink now - 89 points - Paul Read More

Well, it was like a southern Rhone white, like a CdP or something.  It was good.  Rich and weighty, lots of pear flavor.  I like the flavor of pear but not the texture of the fruit, so that's good.  Dry, but full and fruity.  Went great with our Chinese noodles with vegetari... • Domaine Font de Michelle Cuvée Etienne Gonnet Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2005

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep ruby in the glass, a bit darker than usual but in my view an ideal color. The nose presents aromas of ripe fruit, plum, cherry and dates, overlaid with some wonderful dried floral and spice notes. The taste is a nice rush of sweet fruit up front, a combination of berries and dried fruit that transition to some lovely spice n... Read More

  • Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2010

    Snoothrank:

This Ogier Chateauneuf-du-Pape is wonderful; perhaps the "rolled pebbles" are the answer. In any case, this well-priced wine is redolent of strawberries (yes, somewhat like a deep Burgundy), smooth and food friendly; ready to roll, deep and finishing with the headiness we have come to expect from this region. 89.
