Located along a southeastern section of the Rhone River, this area is home to prestigious appellations such as Chateaneuf du Pape as well as to the quantity-oriented Cotes du Rhone. It enjoys a warm climate that seamlessly becomes Mediterranean toward the south of the region. Most of the wines are blends. The most important red grape variety is Grenache, followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Carignan, Cuonoise, and a few others. The white wines are made mostly from Marsanne and Roussanne. The most well-known dessert wine from this region is Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. In addition to Chateauneuf du Pape, some of the best appellations include Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise, Lirac, Costieres de Nimes, Vinsobres, and Tavel; the last of these produces only rose. After this are about 20 villages which are allowed to append their names to the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. Cotes du Rhone is the most general appellation. Most wines with that designation are simple, inexpensive table Read more »

  • Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone 2012

Excellent Rhone red blend from the Perrin Family (of Beaucastel fame). Decanted for an hour or so and it still opened up more as the evening went on. On the nose there was lots of perfume at the start which blew off fairly quickly being replaced by notes of blackberry and blueberry. On initial taste the syrah really jumps out with layers of ripe... Read More

  • Les Closiers Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010

This wine was purchased in The Hague to augment the closure of the day spent in Amsterdam. It is about 80% Grenache and exudes the aroma of crushed red currant, cherry whips and Kirsch. A bit untamed on the palate but full of aforesaid red fruit and gentle tannin. Worthy. 89 points. Read More

  • First part done.So the locals also suggested Jocko's to my wife, and we ... we ... and Syrah, Bandol or southern Rhone,  but Cab and Mourvedre sound like they would clash.  Well, not so much, it turns out.  I also tasted the Syrah from two locations, one cooler and one warmer, with about 14% grenache.  Surprisingly good for a Central Coast Sy... • Domaine Grand Nicolet Rasteau Vieilles Vignes 2010

If you like the Southern Rhone, this wine from the denominated commune (village) of Rasteau is a delight. It bears a perfume of sweet raspberry and cherry, and the entry is a pleasure... there is that grainy, chocolate raspberry coffee flavour throughout - almost overpowering - but not too, too unsubtle. Finish is long and satisfying with tanni... Read More
