Crozes-Hermitage is the Northern Rhone’s largest appellation, both in terms of acreage and in terms of production. It produces mostly red wine made from Syrah, but some white wine from Marsanne and Roussanne is made as well. The wines are also often less expensive and of lower quality than those of neighboring appellations, so it’s important to familiarize oneself with the best producers, such as Graillot and Colombier. Most Crozes-Hermitage is less ageworthy and better for early drinking than other Northern Rhone wines.

  • Ferraton Pere & Fils Crozes-Hermitage la Matinière 2007

    Snoothrank:

Fresh fruits, white peppers and a lot of freshness.Looking for a clean and pure Syrah, this is definitely the type of Syrah I love. You can really taste the terroir and the fruit, this is not oaky. It's all about fruit and freshness. So clean and mineral, a MUST !! Read More

  • Château Curson Crozes-Hermitage 2003

    Snoothrank:

Rich but restrained and elegant. Nose of cherry, juicy red fruit, pepper and other spices and pencil shavings. Palate of red fruit, sour cherries and spices. Oak imparts an almost caramel-like rich sweet smoothness to the front palate. Rich, integrated tannins with some bitterness on end palate, which balances well with some of the sweeter notes... Will look forward to seeing how this evolves over time in the cellar. Nice cassis aroma, with a twinge of chocolate. Full fruit palate with a long and peppery finish. Read More

  • Emmanuel Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage 2005

    Snoothrank:

In my life I have had three ecstatic wine experiences. One was a Chateauneuf du Pape at Bofinger's in Paris in about 2001--which I stupidly forgot to write down. Another was a Savigny-les-Beaunes 1999 which I have never been able to repeat. This wine was the third. The wine is fruity, completely round, without the sharpness on the palate or the ... Read More

  • Cave de Tain l'Hermitage Crozes-Hermitage Selection Premiere 2005

    Snoothrank:

I tossed it down the insinkerator--just for good measure. This wine--at least the bottle I got at Binny's in Chicago--had long turned to a watery precursor of vinegar. Nothing like the smooth and rich fruity elixir of the same grape, same, vintage, same appellation produced by Emmanuel Darnaud of which I had just drank the last bottles discovera... Read More
