Cornas Wine

Cornas is a major appellation in the northern Rhone. Only red Cornas is made. Cornas easily approaches Hermitage and Cote-Rotie in quality and finesse. It, too, has terraced, sun-roasted slopes planted to Syrah, and produces inky, powerful wines which prefer long aging. Of course, these inhumanly steep slopes are difficult to farm, so the appellation fell into decline in the early 20th century. In the 1980s, interest in these excellent wines returned, and now, it’s a source of some of the best value in the entire region.

Cornas on Snooth

  • Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2010

    Snoothrank:

This has a wonderful nose filled with meat, floral mint, and green olive aromas all topped with a nice dash of cracked pepper. On entry this is filled with dusty tannins supporting stiff fruit that shows a nice blend of concentration and minerality but this does lack some acidity and finishes fairly quickly showing some heat and clumsy extractio... • Franck Balthazar Chaillot Cornas 2010

    Snoothrank:

Just beautiful on the nose with fresh aromas of violets, black pepper and sweet crushed fruit. Perhaps a touch soft on entry, this firms up in the mouth with fine grained tannins and good acidity supporting slightly gamy and slightly astringent red berry fruit that has a slightly inky feel on the backend and shows fine persistence to the fruit t... • Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Terres Brûlées 2007

    Snoothrank:

Funky, barnyardy nose/ Salty, savory charcuterie aromas with dark blue and black fruits. Crushed stone. Iron. Lush on the palate with peppery black and blue fruit, along with some purple fruits. Sage and herb-infused flavors and savory notes. Rich and lush and endures nicely. Ends on a roasty tone.89 pts.3/9/13 Read More

  • Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 60 2010

    Snoothrank:

Fairly oaky on the nose with notes of nutmeg and vanilla over tight floral base notes. I found this to be woody and dull. On the palate, the wine felt flat and tense, badly needing some time in the cellar to calm down the hard, mineral-laden flavors. The fruit did emerge a bit on the finish, but even there the flavors were more on the spicy side... Read More
