Cornas Wine

Cornas is a major appellation in the northern Rhone. Only red Cornas is made. Cornas easily approaches Hermitage and Cote-Rotie in quality and finesse. It, too, has terraced, sun-roasted slopes planted to Syrah, and produces inky, powerful wines which prefer long aging. Of course, these inhumanly steep slopes are difficult to farm, so the appellation fell into decline in the early 20th century. In the 1980s, interest in these excellent wines returned, and now, it’s a source of some of the best value in the entire region.

Cornas on Snooth

  • I opened a couple 2002 Northern Rhone reds (Syrah) last week. TGB Wine Chart ... young. The Cote Rotie and Cornas were very acidic with little structure and light body. The price was reduced to around $30. Great deal! Although not perfect, these wines hit that sweet spot that most Norther Rhone wines do for me.Today, I opened up a 2005 Chateau ... Read More

  • M. Chapoutier Cornas 2003

Here is a Cornas from a good vintage and a well-respected shipper. Lots of red fruit on the noise with a hint of bite (acetyl). Lots of acidity on the palate which (wrongly) suggests aging potential beyond the present as the red fruit core is disappearing fast. Some tannins remain, but little depth - a surprising issue given the vintage. An ... Read More

  • Guy de Barjac Cornas 1988

This opens with a superfunky olive laced nose full of barnyard notes. There are intriguing stemmy tones that emerge here and while this is a touch light its super complex on the nose. On entry this is tight with lovely crisp tannins and a finely balanced structure. This is built for speed not luxury, as the tiny core of cherry fruit is kept open... Read More
