Condrieu Wine

Condrieu (From the French coin de ruisseau meaning "corner of the brook") is a French wine-growing Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) located in the northern Rhône wine, near Vienne and to the south of the Côte-Rôtie AOC. The vineyards are situated in the seven communes of Limony, Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, Saint-Pierre-de Boeuf, Vérin, and Condrieu in the French departments of Ardèche, Rhône and Loire on the steep slopes of the foothills of the Massif Central on the right bank of the Rhône river. The four southernmost communes can also produce wine under the Saint-Joseph AOC. The wines made in this AOC are exclusively white, from the Viognier grape, which may have originated in the region. Within Condrieu is the enclave AOC of Château-Grillet, producing wines that are also 100% Viognier. Source: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condrieu_AOC) – Description from Philip James

I bought this a while ago on www.bidforwine.co.uk and drank some the other night with my dinner of smoked haddock and finished it the following evening with some cheese.I liked it as it was not too dry and contained fruit. It was very similar to the white Jura I had recently from Domaine Geneletti but I prefered the Pierre Chanau white Burgundy a... Snoothrank:

apricot jam with honey suckle, oak found on the nose too, and then minerality on the palate (due to the steep terrace terroir), some pear, teeny bit floral, lingers on the mouth with great balance. really amazing esp for such a difficult, fickle grape Read More

  • I have been patroling the internet to find out if Condrieu (Viognier from the northern Rhone) is worth aging - or even capable.  I have a 2006 Domaine du Chene that has been sitting in my fridge for some time now and have begun to wonder about its status.  Everything that I have read on the internet has been a bag of mixed opinions; saying that ... • Condrieu les Ravines Robert Niero 2004

    Snoothrank:

Very much a wine to be had with food rather than on its own. We had Chilli Con Carne and it was a very good match but later after eating it felt very bitter. Dark fruit, plum, tar, slightly smokey but quite herbal too. Not as think as I was expecting but its not a real fruity one to say the least. Read More
