Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

  • Paul Joboulet Aene Hermitage "Domaine de Thalabert" 2005

Very approachable and tame, but with enough spice to keep things interesting. Held its own very nicely with the somewhat spicy polenta dish we paired it with. The mix of flavors was great...perhaps because we drank it young. If it got any smoother it may become boring. Not a wine that achieves eye-opening flavors, it nevertheless is devoid of a... • Dard Ribo & Crozes-Hermitage 2006

Wow a syrah that isn't just about the fruit? Intense peppercorns and beefy notes on the nose. Palate shows the same without a reliance on oak for the spicey finish. Not a wine for everyone. Unfiltered and probably not an ager, but a great expression of terroir here. Read More

  • Gerin Condrieu la Loye 2006

White peach is what I remember most from a tasting with Mr. gerin himself. This was by far my favorite of the white wines we tasted that evening. The white peach on the nose was very nice, but I remember the wine was not overly sweet on the tounge overall. Read More
