Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

  • Guffens Jean-Marie Bien Entendu Blanc 2006

    Snoothrank:

(90% Chardonnay, 10% Viognier). Very bright and given over to intense white floral, star fruit, grapefruit and white pepper. The mineral influence plays a leading role and leads straight into the focused palate of tangerine, pineapple guava (feijoa) with layers of lemony curd and acacia honey. All neatly wrapped up in a crisp burst of lime and w... Read More

  • Guffens Jean-Marie Enfin Rouge 2005

    Snoothrank:

(40% Grenache, 40% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) Inspired by the Luberon terroir, this wine's aromatic profile is thick and loaded with plum, herb, rose and tar. Stick your nose in deeper and you find sweet leather, dark chocolate and raspberry. A beastly beauty that takes over with gobs of burly, but properly supported, black plum, spice cake ... Read More

  • Gaillard Pierre Cote Rotie Cote Rozier 2005

    Snoothrank:

This is the North Berkeley "Cuvee Unique" which is 100% Syrah. The nose is a bit more perfumed than that of the "Viallieres"; not quite as animale. This wine still has an inky, aromatic char and a bit more ripe plum and blackberry mixes with the sweet tar, black tea and spice. Dried chewy plum with the tannins gathering mid-palate. The acid prof... Read More

  • Gaillard Pierre Cote Rotie les Viallieres 2005

    Snoothrank:

This is the North Berkeley "Cuvee Unique" of which only 3 barrels were made. A veritable heavyweight contender with a rich, concentrated, brutish demeanor right out of the corner. A creature of earthy, meaty and roasted/charred fruit (inky blackberry, plum and currant) consistency accented with a heady peppery floral and roasted plum and vanilli... Read More
