Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

  • Auguste Pierre & Olivier Clape Cornas Domaine Clape 1999

One of my favourite Cornas and the best vintage I tasted from Clape ones: rich, mineral, kind of under forest notes, slight smoky on the palate. Structure, complexity, not tough as some other Cornas can be. A great example of this small but very qualitative area. Read More

  • Hermitage Cuvee de Loree Blanc Chapoutier 2005

Awesome, superlative white wine. Tasted only once last year, but I still remember its honey, kumquat, floral flavours, on a very precise mineral structure. Marsanne at its best, with a veeeeeery persistent finish. Read More

  • St. Cosme St. Joseph 2005

The nose is delicate yet complex with aromas of pepper, dust, earth, spice, and dark fruit including blackberries. Really good balance in the wine with just a touch of acidity. The body is on the lighter side of medium. Substantial yet fine tannins. Great finish that stays for a while and remains balanced. This was an excellent wine, I high... Read More
