Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

  • Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu Blanc d'Argent 2012

Nice enough Viognier from Condrieu. Floral aromatics of medium intensity. The palate is very floral with honeysuckle and also some stone fruit flavors of ripe peach and a touch of ripe pear. This is lacking a bit of acidity. The finish is of medium length dominated by floral notes. Read More

  • EM - those Cymbidiums look great growing 'in the wild' as it were.  I think we've had orchids in pots ever since I knew Sandra - I don't remember growing them outside in the dirt.  Sandra was really into succulents when I met her but alas we can't grow cactus in Northern Virginia successfully.  I think it's too humid.Tonight we saw 'Gigi' at The... • That flatter(closeder)-at-first phenomenon is something common across most every French region. That's why I'm always taken aback when people open a French bottle--whether from the Rhone or Burgundy or Bordeaux or anywhere else--taste it within a few minutes, talk about how basically boring it is and then gravitate towards the CA wines and assig... • Zuf, I do drink S. Rhones, had a CdP this week that was comparatively reasonable--2010 Domaine La Roquete.  Third vintage of the wine I've had.  It was fine, but not at the level of the N. Rhones that I like. Dunc, I can find St. Jo and Croze and they are fine, but not, generally, as breathtaking. That said, last night we opened the second of th... Read More
