Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop in London's Chelsea [ www.hhandc.co.uk ]. Snoothrank:

This bottle of wine was part of a lot I bought from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/44411 . Cote-Rotie is an AOC created in 1940, although wine-making here goes back to at least the Romans, for red wines located on the west bank of the Rhone about 20 miles south of Lyon. The name roughly translates as 'roasted slope ' because the ... Read More

  • Domaine Pierre Gonon Saint Joseph Blanc "Les Oliviers" 2011

    Snoothrank:

Much more golden colored in the glass than I would have normally expected. Something of an apply nose with, maybe, a touch of yeast. Some of that apple flavor at the front of the tongue, but that diminishes. Some earthiness or mineral flavors seem to then emerge. Then some pleasant acid tartness. The wine seems to have an unusual mouth feel... Read More

  • Saint Cosme Saint-Joseph 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very earthy nose. Medium bodied on initial introduction to the mouth. Flavors seem to match earthiness of the nose. I cant think of a single fruit flavor that I might use to describe this. As a stretch I might suggest vegetative hints like bell pepper or asparagus. Quite tart as it passes towards the back of the palate. Read More
