Northern Rhône Wine

The northern Rhone is a section of the river of the same name in the southeast of France. Here, the Rhone Valley is steep and narrow, and the powerful mistral wind blows through it. The best vineyards are on terraced slopes. Syrah is the most important grape variety, and some of the red wines made from it stand with the best of Bordeaux. The following appellations produce mostly red wines made from Syrah, as well as a small amount of white wine: Cote Rotie (no white), St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas (no white), and Hermitage. Condrieu and Chateau Grillet both make unique wines from Viognier. Chateau Grillet is a monopole -- an entire appellation that belongs to only one producer. There are also sparkling white wines made in St-Peray from Marsanne and Roussanne.

Northern Rhône on Snooth

  • "When the moon hits your eye/like a big pizza pie/that's ... the best ... the best attributes of the Northern Rhone, particularly Hermitage or Cote-Rotie, with the savory bacon and olive, the rocky minerals and the tannic spine of those great wines?  After some thought, he took out a 2008 DTR Ranch Syrah.  To his credit, this is not the most e... There are a lot of wines I love. Very few I have actually dreamed about. This wine is one of those. On the nose, its honey and fruit, but with a hint of a mineral edge. You expect it to be pure honey on the palate but its not. This wine surprises you like that. Its like those summer days, when its burning hot and all your memories melt into a plea... Read More

This wine is like a winter vacation. On the nose, its the scene of pine needles mixed with freshly fallen snow the smell of stepping out in the morning, skis in hand, ready for a day on the slopes. You can smell the bite of cold, crisp mountain air.On the palate, the wine is smooth and sleek, like the skis swishing across the snow as you race do... Read More

A subtle, vaguely floral scent. On the palate, this wine leaps at you, strong, at the back of the tongue... before slowly drifting forwards. The boy ... Read More
