  Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardeche 2007

  Snoothrank:

  Tantalising nose of lightly buttered popcorn. Same on the palate but very fresh too. The oak is ever-so-subtle, perfectly balanced. A long-term favourite that never disappoints.

It is towards the lighter side than medium and has a very abrupt finish that is a bit on the acidic side. The problem I have with this wine is that it doesn't compare well with a good Syrah nor does it compare well with a good Grenache. It is a new world wine and so might appeal more to American tastes than people used to more traditional Cotes-du-Rhones.    (hide)

  Black berries and cherries integrated with the right amount of spice along with a bit of minerally earth. It seemed a bit closed so it could benefit from two or three more years in the bottle. This wine is a great value and I intend to drink a lot more of it

This is the only Rhone Pinot Noir ... http://www.snooth.com/wine/ardeche-pinot-noir/ The Ardeche lies in a cool, parallel valley to the west of the Coteaux de Tricastin in the northern Southern Rhone. In recent years, Louis Latour, Georges Duboeuf and others have made big investments here because land is cheap, but the region seems to have a lot of potential (good climate, soils, etc). I can only really find Chardonnay and Viognier on the market from these producers, but I know that they've planted a substantial amount of Pinot Noir. The local co-op, Vignerons Ardechois, have high standards and also do a decent VDP Pinot Noir. You might be able to find some of these wines at a large UK wine shop, but you're skulking around the bottom end of the barrel here. These are sub 4.99 pound wines that delivery good fresh fruit (like a VDP d'Oc Pinot Noir), but will disappoint a Burgundy lover.    (hide)
