Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

  • Crozes Hermitage Equinoxe 2008

really wonderful wine: the longer this stays open the more it opens up into great earthy, vegetal, and dirty qualities without loosing any of the fruit that is brewing just beneath these almost fresh forest floor smells. So great, medium bodied, well balanced tannins. Read More

  • Domaine Cristia Vin de Pays Grenache 2007

Not an overly complex aroma but a highly attractive palate - upfront sweetness, rounded and smooth with a hint of tannin and a balancing acidity. Good herb, spice and hints enlivens a plumy richness of flavour. Smooth and drinkable enough to slurp without food - it is that richness and sweetness helping it all along but there is enough weight to... Read More

  • Domaine Cristia Cairanne 2007

Pleasant enough and again demonstrating the ranges' sweet-fruited drinkability but lacking a little 'zing' and complexity to make it stand out. Hints of ink, a smidge of ink and plenty of blackberry fruit give the palate weight and some interest. Perhaps a little yong still. http://www.spittoon.biz/domaine_cristia_from_naked_win.html Read More

  • Domaine de Cristia Gigondas Cotes du Rhône 2007

Very similar in style to the Grenache - an inherent, smooth richness that makes for high 'drinkability'. More spice on the flavour but a little lighter in style with a longer lasting flavour. Spicy, leathery touches - another good sign of a perfect roast lamb match. Lovely flavours of red fruits mixed with blackberries, elderberry, a leatherines... Read More

  • Domaine de la Tourade Côtes du Rhône 2005

Wonderful nose with dark fruit, earth, spice, herbal notes, and pepper. In the ... is a high quality Cotes du Rhone that to me could easily pass for a lower end Vacqueyras or Gigondas. Good QPR. Recommended for fans of Rhone win Read More

  • Château Pesquié Grenache Blend Côtes du Ventoux Artemia 2005

Brilliant Rudy Red. Nose of wild blueberry, smoked bacon, fall leaves and chalk dust. Flavors of Black cherry and anise on the initial attack that turns a little raisiny but with a soft texture that carries it well. Over time a hint of beet juice emerges from this intense fruity wine. A long finish that shows a bit of bitter coffee. Read More
