Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

  • Paul Joboulet Aene Hermitage "Domaine de Thalabert" 2005

Good aromatic intensity marries good, hot rock, granitic dust elements with cool fruit and a touch of toast. This is made in a clean, brisk style with good intensity to the red berry/strawbeery fruits. High acid and a little loose on the mid-palate though the finish is clean and fresh with a bit of emerging herbal complexity. 2009-2011 Read More

  • Perrin & Fils Gigondas 2005

Dark Ruby color, Very expressive aromas of pepper, raspberry, smoke and cured meats. Angular with noticable tannin. Red fruit a bit of bitter coffee. Finish is medium long and drying. This is good but some time would allow the flavors to catch up to the amazing nose on this wine. Read More

  • Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 2003

I feel like this wine loves me, and for good reason! No, not really. A perfectly balanced montage of every flavor that I love, a little gamey, vanilla, blackberry, mint, oak, swiss cheese, rosemary, meaty lamb. Many thanks to Gregory for sharing this one. Read More

  • Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 2003

Big nose with lots of copper and iron. Fruity, spicy, and complex with a long elegant finish. Really great subtle aged flavor that reminds me of a grand old chateauneuf du pape with its gaminess. Hot damn I'm giving this a 5 - I can't think of any way to improve this. Read More

  • Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 2003

Very ripe rich dried dark fruit flavors. Palate is slightly hot but it's gratifying. Very complex flavors, some chocolate and tree bark. Rustic. Thick and refreshing and coats the mouth quite well. Finish is slightly medicinal, long and leaves me wanting more. Read More
