Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

  • Chateau Saint Jean Cotes du Rhone 2006

A bit off-putting - the roller-coaster ride of a young wines evolution in bottle. Unlike its previous vintage, the wine is a bit more linear (laser like fruit focus with more expressive alcohol); oak influence rearing its ugly head. Overjoyed to have tasted it, but some infanticide took place with this wine. Read More

  • I've gotten a few questions from both consumers and producer about this GTi ... straight for the southern Rhone and write up a Chateauneuf du Pape but I opted instead to pull the Cote du Rhone from my favorite CdP producer: Beaucastel!http://www.snooth.com/wine/chateau-de-beaucastel-cotes-du-rhone-coudoulet-de-beaucastel-2005/As usual Coudoule... • Château de Beaucastel White Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc 2005

As usual Coudoulet punches well above it's price class! This is so well framed with the assertive structure of 2005 wrapped in a deep flannelly blanket of spicy plum fruits. There are nice mineral, floral and earthen notes here but this is really about wonderfully pure, deep fruit. I love Coudoulet with some age on, I just, regrettably, finishe... Read More

  • Collection Alain Corcia Louis de Clermont Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Julie France Rhone Rhone Rhone Blend Red 2007

Absolutely loved this Chateauneuf du Pape! The color was a fantastic deep purple. The bouquet was neverending, powerful raspberry with a hint of spicey oak. The palate was an immediate mouthful of raspberry baked turnover with inner mixed dark fruit. Nice lingering finsh. Medium to full bodied. Wonderful, wonderful wine! Read More
