Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

  • Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Tradition" 2006

A bit gamy on the nose with a big dose of brett that obscures a lot of the bright berry fruit and spice notes. Leather with a barnyard edge that veers closely to the band-aid end of the spectrum though nice notes of kirsch, herb, dried grasses and dried raspberries battle back. Sweetly fruited with a lovely natural brightness and moderate, yet... Read More

  • Domaine des Sénéchaux Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2006

What a pretty beast. The nose is nice but does not give very much away: strawberry, vanilla, white chocolate and minerals suggest a pretty - if maybe a little unexciting - wine. Not so. On the palate it is absolutely delicious with concentrated strawberry and licorice as well as toasty oak. For a few seconds the beautiful sweetness lingers, and ... Read More

  • Marc Kreydenweiss Costières-de-Nîmes Domaine des Perrieres 2005

A touch acetic, certainly earthy and gamy with some tobacco, leather, earth, slight reductive funk edge. Aromatic and complex if deicedly organic smelling. Round at first then turning quite sharp with cutting acids supporting cranberry, raspberry, unripe strawberry fruit with a raw beefy edge and some background earth and spice notes that gain ... • Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape 2001

Yellow and brown tone of color is very thin around rim. Overall water color tone looks thick & strong. But thickness flowing down the glass is medium. Butter, oak, very light pleasing smoke, pear and vanilla smells are based overall. Berry kinds smells are also pleasing. Chocolate and cheddar cheese added with leather, dried grapes, dark cherry....
