The Controlled Appellation of Cotes du Rhone Villages was established in 1966 in the south east France. Exclusive to the Southern Rhone, Cotes du Rhone Villages wines covers 95 villages, of which 18 have the right to include their name on the read more...label.

TERROIR: The soil types are the same as in Cotes du Rhone, but the climate and soil criteria accepted, are far more strict, due to the production rules for this Appellation. As a rule, stony argilo-calcaireous soils produce full-bodied complex wines, deeply colored with a powerful bouquet. Dry stony soils produce more refined wines, renowned for elegance, finesse and fruitiness.

GRAPE VARIETIES (red):
Primary: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre
Secondary: Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, Camarese or Vaccarese, Picpoul, Terret

TASTING & DRINKING: The full-bodied red wines are the ideal compliment for game (venison, wild boar, hare), Provencal stew, and a myriad of stuffed vegetables dishes and truffle seasoned specialties.

The white wines, with their floral overtones, marry well with hot or cold shellfish, creamed poultry, and everything across the cheese board including blue cheeses and goat cheese.

The rose wines, with their fruity flavors provide a suave accompaniment for mixed salads, chicken filets, delicatessen meats, mixed grills as well as Mediterranean specialty dishes such as pizza, couscous, paella, tajine, etc.

Marks & Spencer own brand, and really surprisingly good for the price. Starts out seeming to lack acid, but opens up nicely to savoury flavours and a lot of berry fruit, balanced nicely by a typically Rhône-ish steeliness.
