Cassis (not to be confused with the blackcurrant liqueur of the same name) is a town and wine region on the coast of Provence in southern France. The vineyards are located along the sunny coast with cooling sea breezes and protected from mistral winds by rugged cliffs, much like neighboring Bandol. One of these happens to be one of the tallest in France, called La Grande Tete (big head).

AOC Cassis, established in 1936, covers whites, reds and rosés. The whites tend to be full-bodied and bit herbaceous. Ugni Blanc is the principal white grape, followed by Marsanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc (Doucillon Blanc), Pascal, Sauvignon Blanc, and Terret Blanc. Reds consist mainly of Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which also find their way into rosés.

Sadly, to drink wines from Cassis (and possibly the reason why many outside France only know the liqueur), one has to be in Provence. Hopefully more of these character-driven wines find their way onto international shelves Read more »

Cassis on Snooth

  • We had a bit of rain, here, on Monday.  Yesterday was a gloriously clear ...  Very light taste of cassis on the tongue.  Then, some suggestion of unsweetened chocolate.  Some still serious tannin.  Interestingly enough, not the most full-bodied CS.  I might think this one is more an old world style wine.  It is certainly not an in-your-face fr... • Al, I think it is fultile to try to calculate an ROI on wine.I have also ... ... softness of the blueberry/cassis flavors on entry.  Mid-palate there is a bitterness I would associate with cocoa that gives complexity.  Then there is also some serious tannin. I think this is the point where many tasters would lose interest.  I like it because I... Read More

This is actually a red wine that I am happy to drink without accompaniment.  I think I bought this one for mid-$40s.  I think that is a very good price for it.And it is "pure Napa Valley w... Al, I've found another bottle with a painted label. The problem with ...  Some pleasant fruit--cassis, bluberry, cherry--on introduction, but that is follosed by some still-stout tannin that shades the flavor profile away from fruit to slightly bitter earthiness--maybe tea flavor.Well. • Here's the note from the Silverback website: 2010 ... year. Dark, deep red fruits, cassis and demerara emerge as the wine develops in the glass.
